About the «Journey to Self» concert
The life of each of us is a journey of self-discovery. And, of course, musicians and composers seek themselves. Where are their routes? In the spaces of the soul, in the art of different countries and epochs. The Reheard Ensemble (Moscow) is inspired by the aestheticism of contemporary French music the echo of Impressionism (Gerard Pesson) and the meditative spirit of Japanese classics (Toru Takemitsu).
The concert program «Journey to Myself» is a meditative immersion telling about the creative search of musicians and composers in the spaces of the soul and art. A soft zone of relaxed listening will be organized in the concert hall of the Arsenal.
Program:
Marco Stroppa - Seven strophes for a literary drone for violin, cello and piano
Franco Donatoni - Ciglio II for violin and flute
Helmut Lachenmann - Echo Andante for piano solo
Giacinto Scelsi - Pwyll for flute solo
Jörg Widmann - Duets for violin and cello
About the concert «Ossia. Solyanka»
The Reheard Ensemble puts its desire to hear sound in a new way and to pass this experience on to the listener in every performance. It is not surprising that a group of young musicians, students and graduates of the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Concert Hall and the Gnesin Russian Academy of Music, often choose to perform works by composers for whom the realization of new developments is closely connected with the live creative process.
Operating with familiar forms and techniques, Marco Stroppa and Franco Donatoni, however, destroy the musical reality that the listener is accustomed to, offering a glimpse of a complex abstract mosaic of individual sounds, calibrated strokes, and contrasting dynamics. This is no longer «music frozen in stone», but a «monument» that is constantly being built and renewed - a monument to the postmodernism of our time.
Program:
Olga Raeva - Le Voilier for violin, cello and piano
Tristan Muray - Feuilles à travers les cloches for flute, violin, cello and piano
Kaija Saariaho - Mirrors for flute and cello
Anna Pospelova - PiFluViCe for flute, violin, cello and piano (the work was created within the framework of the creative program of the Union of Composers of Russia «Notes and Quotations», supported by the Ministry of Culture)
Kaija Saariaho - Light and Matter for violin, cello and piano
About the concert «Shadow reflections»
It would seem that progress is rapidly covering all spheres of our lives. But many human problems, among which we can name such phenomenon as «loneliness in the crowd», do not hurry to leave the society of highly developed megacities.
The images of the refracted surrounding reality presented in the works of K. Saariaho, A. Pospelova, and O. Raeva will reveal to the audience the spaces of human nature. What awaits there? The hope and joy of a realistic picture of nature? Or something terrible a terrible dream, a mirage that one would like to hide and not notice?
By contrasting trios and duos, combining conventional sound production and extended techniques - utilizing all the subtleties of performing contemporary academic music, Ensemble Reheard invites us to listen not only to the lights and shadows of the world around us, but also to see the hidden music within ourselves.
Program:
Kaija Saariaho - Mirrors for flute and cello
Toshiro Mayuzumi - Bunraku for cello solo
Anna Pospelova - PiFluViCe for flute, violin, cello and piano
Atsuhiko Gondai - Transient Bell for piano solo
Kaija Saariaho - Violins for violin and piano
Toru Takemitsu - Voice for flute solo
Kaija Saariaho - Light and Matter for violin, cello and piano
Maria Anikeeva - What remains of the name of the rose, after the rose disappears? For violin, cello, flute and piano
About the concert «The dawn will not come...»
Ensemble Reheard's evening is built around rarely heard contemporary music, predominantly Japanese, and inspired by the Japanese theater art of rakugo. Just as a rakugo artist creates multiple characters by switching between voices and changing facial expressions, Reheard follows a story about overcoming fear by changing the line-up of musicians, bringing new characters to the stage, and painting different locations with sounds.
Before the audience unfolds a vivid theatrical story, which has everything that a real narrative about heroes requires: the «samurai» Toru Takemitsu and Toshiro Mayuzumi, the voice of Atsuhiko Gondai from the frontier of the universe and the long thorny path to the light of Kaiya Saariaho.

Shadow Reflections
On April 6 in the New Concert Space of Zaryadya, the Reheard Ensemble presented the musical program «Reflections of Shadows». For the first time in Moscow, a new composition by Anna Pospelova, created within the framework of the Russian Composers Union's creative program «Notes and Quotations», was performed.
About the program It would seem that progress is rapidly covering all spheres of our lives. But many human problems, including such phenomenon as “loneliness in the crowd”, do not hurry to leave the society of highly developed megacities. Ossia. Solyanka.
In the twenty-first century it is difficult to become a revolutionary pioneer. It is not easy to invent new forms or previously unused extended techniques of sound production. We find ourselves locked in an endless stream of self-citation and repetition of what has already been invented before us. But familiar codes no longer work the way they used to. Contemporary art distorts cultural space, colliding disparate elements that once made up a harmonious whole. Roman arches and columns are no longer load-bearing structures, deceiving the viewer by putting them at an artistic and engineering impasse. Something similar can be found in the creative approach of some composers.
Ossia is a musical term denoting a permissible variant performance of a piece of music. The term «ossia» is derived from the Italian word for «possible variant», originally spelled «o sia» (translated as «or else»).

The project «Music Now» is realized by the Foundation «Cultural Capital of the Volga Region» and the Volga-Vyatka branch of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts (Arsenal) with the support of the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives.
How can we convey the play of light and shadow in sound, transform the visual experience into an auditory one? Just as a single ray, refracted through a lens, divides into a whole spectrum, so sound, transforming and constantly changing, is capable of conveying absolutely different pictures and states.
«Sailboat» by Olga Raeva, «Mirrors» by Kaija Saariaho, «Grayness. Magnetism. Blossom» by Anna Romashkova - different stories and plots united by the theme of light in all its manifestations: from bright highlights to mysteriously muted spectrum.
The trio that gave its title to the concert, Kaija Saariaho's Light and Matter, was created by the composer in 2014 in New York City. The piece was inspired by the continuous transformation of light on the glittering leaves and still hardwood tree trunks of Morningside Park, located beneath Kaija's windows.
Program: Olga Raeva - Le Voilier for violin, cello and piano Kaija Saariaho - Mirrors for flute and cello Anna Romashkova - Grayness. Magnetism. Blossom for flute, violin and piano Anna Pospelova - PiFluViCe for flute, violin, cello and piano (the work was created within the framework of the creative program of the Union of Composers of Russia «Notes and Quotations», supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation) Mirela Ivicevich - FEAR.LESS.SONGS for violin, cello and piano Kaija Saariaho - Light and Matter for violin, cello and piano
Reheard in GRAUND Solyanka
The program reflects on the interaction between French and Japanese contemporary academic music. Does this dialog resemble a leisurely conversation or a fierce debate between two distinctive cultures? The East has attracted and inspired composers in France for many decades, not without Rameau and Debussy. But members of Japan's various arts also studied the achievements of European science and culture, from philosophy to music theory.
One of the points of contact is the picturesqueness of musical canvases. And it is not so much about sound imitation and visualization, but rather about subjective fixation of the surrounding reality, about incredible observation and the ability to contemplate «other lights» behind familiar landscapes. Looking into the surrounding real world, to reflect the unified essence of nature and one's own ego, to saturate each sound with «vibrations of emotions» - this is how one of the compositional approaches of both countries can be characterized, which is emphasized in the concert program. The meditative atmosphere of Solyanka's historic GRAUND space harmoniously complements the lyricism and emotionality of the chamber music.

The Music Now project is six concerts presenting a panorama of contemporary academic music performed by Russian musicians. The curator of the project, musicologist Ksenia Anufrieva, has tried to present a wide range of phenomena that inspire contemporary Russian composers: folklore and modern information space, nature and human relations. The concerts will demonstrate the variety of modern compositional techniques - vocals, modern methods of playing traditional musical instruments, electronics, multimedia - and will show how close to each of us is the desire to dream, contemplate nature and learn new things.
